” Because of poverty, her parents had to let them live with the same family who owned the land in Bulacan they were taking care of.”

” In the midst of hard work, Tita Frida found love in the same shop she grew up and worked at. “

Frida Dumaquit is a hardworking mother of 4. She has been creating innovative toys with Plush and Play since it started in 2012.

Tita Frida, coined as the “mother of smiles”, was born in the year 1970. As a child, she and her sister Michelle, grew up apart from their parents and were brought up by the Sinco family, a family of local business people who owned a simple tailor shop. Because of poverty, her parents had to let them live with the same family who owned the land in Bulacan they were taking care of.

Growing up, Tita Frida had a difficulty mixing studies with work, because of this she stopped going to school after grade 5. Soon after, she continued to help out in the tailor shop, cleaning and sometimes watching the sewers create different clothing. When there was a need to do more and earn more, Tita Frida decided to leave Bulacan to enter the world of childcare. She became a nanny to different children for almost 3 years.

However, she decided to go back to her roots and learn the craft of sewing because she felt the need to be closer to her family again. Back in the Sinco tailor shop, Tita Frida practiced embroidery and body sewing. She earned enough from her work because they were given salary by operation and she was determined to provide well for her family.

In the midst of hard work, Tita Frida found love in the same shop she grew up and worked at. There, she met Tito Domeng, a man of the same age and profession. They were married and built their quaint famly, with their first born, Charleene. Unfortunately, the Sinco tailor shop met its end and Tita Frida and her family had to relocate to the same land her parents took care of. They stayed there for 7 years where their 2 other children, Daisy and Angelica grew up before it was sold.

Because of Tita Frida’s determination to raise her children in a place of their own, she and Tito Domeng applied to be part of Gawad Kalinga community and were awarded their own home. During their first year in GK Enchanted Farm, Tita Frida stayed at home to raise all of her 4 children, including her newborn and only boy, Nathaniel. When she felt the need to support her growing family, Tita Frida was pleased to receive an invitation from the Plush and Play team.

It was an advantage that Tita Frida knew how to use a sewing machine but Plush and Play challenged her skills in creating the toys by hand. With determination and the passion for her work, Tita Frida learned the basics and eventually was able to share the skill to other nanays. Thanks to her stable work now, she is able to contribute for her children’s education and in improving their home.

As one of the pioneer toy-makers of Plush and Play, Tita Frida has not only raised her children in a safe and loving environment and supported her family financially, she has also showcased her talent and ingenuity in each toy that she creates. And she did all of these with the most genuine smile on her face!
